In our relationship with God, our spiritual life, our formation, our becoming like Jesus? Can there be a root in our souls that grows some gross fruit, that makes us less like Jesus rather than more like him? Yes – and today we will see one of those things. But also, we will see there is a simple fix…all in pursuit of our goal of following Jesus, being more like Jesus, good for us and for our world. We will see these things today, as Paul begins by giving us a whiff of something that stinks in the church in Ephesus. As we have been studying 1 Timothy, we have seen time and time again how this church was being led astray by some of its leaders. These were some bad eggs. Here Paul gets specific, pointing out the gross, smelly fruit they were producing. And he will show us the root that produced the fruit, but also how get rid of the stink.
