We're On the Homeward Trail!!

homeward

We can hardly believe it!!! Today at 3:00 p.m. we received Joy's Visa at the US Embassy! It took a total of about 10-15 minutes (which in itself in a miracle... we can't hardly cross the street here that fast). In the picture at left, Jeanine and Joy are celebrating as we walk back to the apartment.

Bottom line: we are now free to go to America! All the documents have been processed. All the money has been paid (well, except for the credit card expenses). We are frozen. And we are VERY READY to be home! We leave here early Friday morning, January 22!

Thank you for reading this blog and for walking along this journey with us in prayer during the ups, downs, surprises, and blessings. We have many emotions, thoughts and feelings about our experience here -- but the predominant one is thankfulness. Thankful to the Lord and thankful to each one who has helped and supported us at home and here in Ukraine.joy

We hope our experiences will stand as a testimony to God's faithfulness and serve as an encouragement to anyone who senses that God is leading them to take some steps of faith. Of course, as we said at the outset, we know that our own journey with Joy is just beginning!

Getting Closer In the Cold

jimsashainthesnow

The locals tell us that this winter is colder than they have experienced for a number of years. It snows almost every day... except for today when we took a long walk around Kiev. The picture at left was taken at the site of the "Friendship Arch" which commemorates the commitment of good relations between Russia and Ukraine.

Despite the cold outside, the process is "heating up" in our attempts to return home! Joy's passport is being sent overnight (by bus) from Chernivtsi to Kiev. Tomorrow we hope to visit the doctor (for final check ups and blood work) and the U.S. Embassy to secure Joy's Visa (her passport is Ukrainian until we get to America when she can later receive a U.S. passport).

If all goes well... and we know that sometimes even the simple things have not... we still hope to fly back to California this Friday, January 22! Thanks for continuing to pray!

A Breakthrough!

We are thrilled and resting in Kiev today! We are making progress! Here's what happened...

Yesterday morning we were still waiting for some news about Sasha Joy's passport (at left she is pictured outside the passport office in Chernivtsi). The strike continued... nothing looked good. But then, an unexplainable event took place...

The passport office in Chernivtsi -- the one that said it would be impossible to complete a passport for Sasha, the one that our facilitator lobbied and that the orphanage director and counselor personally visited and implored on our behalf... The one that our dear friend Olga talked with whose family member used to be the head of the department in charge of passports for this region -- the one that after all this still said at about noon yesterday that it would not be possible to make any progress because of the passport strike and no new "blue passport forms" are being printed or made available because of it (and I heard the phrase "3 months wait")... Olga called me and said we should wait in Chernivtsi where it is cheaper...

After all this, at about 12:30 pm, we received a call that the local passport office suddenly "found" one of the old "red passport forms" that is no longer made but that will still work. Less than an hour later we were in the car and on our way to Kiev!

Our facilitator still has no idea why the sudden change. She did tell us that it is costing quite a bit more than normal to expedite it (so that it will take only until next week, not 3 months to complete). They just call it an extra fee... :-)

Of course, we believe there is an explanation... The prayers of many and God's help. Sasha Joy is THRILLED and so are we.

Bottom line: we think we will now be able to keep our plane flight on January 22!

Thank you for praying!

First, the Good News, then....

1132010

Well, here we are... still in Chernivtsi with Sasha Joy (at the historic university, former home of the Orthodox Metropolitan).

The Good News is that we have been spending good quality time with our new daughter. On Monday (January 11), the government offices reopened after the long holidays and so we were able to renew the process of filing documents. The "simple" one was to get a birth certificate... it normally takes 2 hours. First day, the power went out. Second day, the person said "I can't complete it while people are here, I might make a mistake. Come back tomorrow." So, we did... today. And, so now we have more good news: a completed birth certificate that lists us as Sasha Joy's legal parents!

The Bad News: We learned today that the passport office has gone "on strike" until the government pays 150 million grevna it owes them! Unbelievable!!!!

We don't know for sure, but if the B.C. office had completed their task in a timely fashion, we might not have the threat of this problem. It's too soon to predict either the outcome of the strike or the implications for us. What we know is, we can't take Sasha Joy out of the country until she has one!

Tomorrow, we are scheduled to leave Chernivtsi and go to Kiev for the final paperwork (and passport) which will take a few days. So far, we are still scheduled to return to California on January 22. Thank you for your ongoing support, encouragment, and prayers! We know that God is in charge and we are trusting Him!

We've got the JOY, JOY, JOY, JOY!

joyjoyjoy

Something new has come into the picture for us (compare photo with the previous post).... JOY (also interchangeable at the moment with Sasha Joy and Sasha)!!!! The 10-day waiting period is now over. At about 9:30 a.m. this morning, we received the final "court decree" from the judge (10 copies of it), saying that Sasha Joy Le Shana is our daughter and officially in our custody. We then left for the orphanage where we found Sasha Joy waiting with her bags packed and ready to go (it was only one small backpack with not much in it)! So, we got to spend a chunk of the afternoon doing something new to us... shopping for young girls clothes!
sasha12-31

Is it OK to say that we are over-joyed?! We are thrilled! At times, it feels hard to believe... it feels like it has been such a long time! We know it has not been easy for us, but she has been incredibly patient through this whole process. We are very proud of her!

As we picked up the court decree, the judge invited us into his chambers. He served us coffee and through the interpreter, apologized "over and over" for altering his decision about the waiting period. He also shared with us that his staff all agreed that Sasha belonged with us -- that it was evident to them because she just looked like she fit!

We are so thankful it is difficult to explain. As we drove back to our hotel, all I could think of was the old chorus, "Thank you, Jesus, Thank you, Jesus..."

There are still some other documents (passport, etc.) still to come, but now we are doing it WITH our new daughter. We will be here at the hotel for a few more days, then back in an apartment until the middle of the month.

Thank you again for all of your prayers. Please join us in thanking the Lord!

Chritmas in Chernvitsi

12-27-09We didn't dream about a White Christmas, we lived it! We have a nice little tree and a few decorations in our hotel room in Chernivtsi (we moved back here temporarily because it is closer to the orphanage). Christmas Eve night, some new friends from the small church here took us bowling and for crepes (they thought we might be lonely). A memorable and different way for us to celebrate!

In Ukraine, their "Christmas" is January 7, so we plan to celebrate it then somehow with Sasha... but on our Christmas morning we sang some Christmas carols and read the Luke 2 passage, then had breakfast and took the taxi to the orphanage. Sasha was waiting and looking out the window for us.Jeanine_and_Sasha_on_Dec_25
We had one small gift for her (a Chip and Dale video in Ukrainian and a pocket calendar of her favorite Ukrainian singing group) -- and she surprised us with some gifts. She bought necklaces for us both and earrings for Jeanine. She was very excited!

Tuesday morning (Dec. 29) we will watch Sasha in her final holiday pageant at the orphanage (she is the lead dancer) and Wednesday we will see her in a production of sasha_and_dadsome kind at her school. Then on Thursday, if all goes well, we will have full custody of Sasha! The adventure continues! Thank you for your ongoing prayers!

Change of Plans

The judge changed his mind about waiving the 10-day waiting period.  Sasha Joy is still our daughter... but we will now not have custody of her until December 31.

Due to the Ukrainian holidays (New Year's and their Christmas on January 7), no government offices are open again until January 11.  That is the earliest we can resume the paperwork to bring her home (which will take another 10 days or so to complete).

Bottom line... we now plan to be here in Ukraine longer than we hoped.

We initially knew this could take up to 6 weeks.  We made plans for that possibility (although we always thought and hoped it would be faster).

We are disappointed, still somewhat in shock, but resolved that we need to be here with Sasha. We feel like we cannot leave her now.

We will miss you and be praying for you all and the Candlelight Services tonight and tomorrow! Merry Christmas and JOY to the world! "Our God is With Us" in Ukraine, too!

IT'S A GIRL!!!!!

Wow!!! Sasha Joy Le Shana is now an official part of our family!!! Amazing!!! Born 11 years ago... but now our new daughter!

But wait.... there's more!!! Not only did the judge grant the adoption, HE WAIVED THE 10-DAY WAITING PERIOD! It is practically unheard of -- they said it would take a miracle!!!! We asked the orphanage director, counselor, and legal representative, and none of them thought it would happen. All were surprised (including our facilitator). Afterward, we learned why. Up until 4 years ago, the waiting period was 30 days. In the previous 10 years, this lengthy waiting period had been waived only once or twice... but the 10-day waiting period had NEVER been waived... until today!!!

We can hardly believe what happened in the courtrtroom. It took less than an hour. The judge interviewed the social services representative (pictured far right), the orphanage director (second from right), the prosecuting attorney (not pictured), both of us AND Sasha. Olga, our facilitator (far left), translated the proceedings for us.

Sasha stood bravely and answered a number of questions. At one point, the prosecutor asked Sasha if she
liked the name "Sasha Joy Le Shana" and if she was willing to change her name to that. She replied immediately, "Of course! I picked it myself!" Jeanine and I both struggled unsuccessfully to hold back tears a number of times. We are so thrilled!!!

We are so thankful for God's grace and for all of your prayers! We felt your prayers as we entered the courtroom (at right) and throughout the hearing. I couldn't help but think that although this man was the judge, God can do anything! And He did!

Still a few more things to do... more paperwork, new birth certificate and passport, etc. We plan to return to California on December 31!

Thank you for your support, encouragement, and faithfulness in prayer!

Dear friends and family,

The snow has finally stopped falling and we are told we might even see the sun next week! Today we were to be observed by an official, but she failed to show up for the second time - we were told not to be concerned about it.

Tomorrow we will watch the St. Nikolai program at the orphange and take lots of pictures!

This evening we had dinner with the leaders of a small group of believers in this city. We had sweet fellowship and felt like we were able to encourage them. They encouraged us!

Our facilitator informed us today that our adoption was approved by the state department of adoption in the capital city. So,we are going into our court date on Monday with approval from all concerned parties - except the judge. He will make the final decree at 2:30 p.m. (4:30 a.m. your time) on Monday. Pray for our little girl as she speaks to the judge and for us to give answers that satisfy him as well.

We are thinking of you and praying for you!

Making Progress!!

Yesterday our final pre-adoption papers were filed. The district judge has granted us an appearance - December 21st at 2:30 p.m. We are praying that he will approve the adoption at that time. After the adoption is confirmed there are a number of other steps before she is officially ours. Please pray for favor with the judge as we request a speedy process.

Thank you for praying. Our health is good, sleep is adequate (sometimes), and we are staying warm despite snow and much cooler temperatures than we are used to!

Snow has finally come to the region! Not much. But it is cold and white.

Each day we make the 40 minute drive to the orphanage to spend some wonderful hours with our little girl – playing games, looking at pictures, hugging, smiling, and communicating as best we can.

Tonight (Sunday), after returning from the orphanage, we visited a small Christian church that some other families from Rose Drive have attended. Jim preached (with the aid of a competent translator).  It went well. We even knew one of the songs. Smile

Tomorrow (Monday) is the next “big day” for us. First, we hope to receive official approval from the orphanage which will be taken along with a letter from "our daughter" to the Social Services department. After they approve these documents, our facilitator takes them (and other documents) to a judge who will be asked to set a court date. The timing of our court appearance will determine when/if we return to California over the Christmas holidays.

Please pray that: 1) all goes smoothly with the paperwork process, 2) the right people will be present at the right times for all approvals, 3) our court appearance will happen soon, 4) we will experience continued safety and good health. Thank you! You are in our prayers!

Joy-filled Reunion!!

037This morning we had the thrill of re-uniting with our little girl after 11 long months! She threw her arms around us and we kissed, hugged, cried and smiled at each other! She gave us a personal tour of her orphange, introducing us to friends and teachers. She showed us the suitcase under her bed where she has kept all of the cards and letters we have sent her. We met with an orphange legal representative, the assistant director and a woman from child protective services as well as our facilitator/translator. They asked our little girl who we were and she proclaimed us "mother and dad!"038

A lot of paperwork was processed today, but there is more to come tomorrow and the beginning of next week, before a court date can be set. Please pray for favor as these papers pass through different hands for approval.

Our 15 hour train ride into this region was quite memorable. It was full of bumps, twists, turns and lots of noise!

Thank you for your faithful prayers for us here and our family at home. We are praying for you!

In His love,
Jim and Jeanine

Success at the SDA!

055

Do we look happy?! We are elated!!! Just minutes ago, we completed our appointment with the official psychologist at the State Department of Adoption. The meeting was startlingly brief... it happened so quickly that it was hard to believe it was over. At least one other family was there when we arrived and still there when we left.

We were asked a total of three questions: 1) when did we host the child in our home; 2) when did we decide we wanted to adopt her; and 3) what are the ages of our other children and did they like her? Easy enough. We thought that was just the preamble... we had rehearsed answers to many other more difficult questions... I felt some of the nervousness/excitement for this meeting almost like when leading up to my Ph.D. oral exams... but it ended up that was it! Wow!

Masha (the psychologist) then showed us the official state documents... which included a picture of when she entered the system and a recent photo... and she told us personal information about her which we already knew -- like the fact that she likes to dance, she is kind-hearted, sincere, and healthy.

She then told us (through the translator) that we would have our "referral" tomorrow afternoon! And we left! The picture of us above was taken right outside the door as we left. If you look closely, you can see the snow starting to fall and our happiness off the charts!

THANK YOU for praying for us and this important first step! We know that many were praying at Rose Drive along with our family around the country. We believe that the Lord has led us thus far and through the prayers of many has opened this door for us. We are so thankful!

Next steps? We take a 15 hour train ride tomorrow night (Wednesday, December 9) to see her and continue the adoption process!

Dear Family and Friends,

We arrived early this morning (1:30 a.m.) and have done some eating, sleeping and walking. The apartment we are staying in is spartan, but adequate and located within walking distance of everything we need. We met with our adoption facilitator briefly this afternoon and still anticipate an appointment with the State Dept. of Adoption on Tuesday morning. Please pray for this initial legal step to go smoothly.

Thank your for your support and prayers. We are praying for you!

In Christ, Jim and Jeanine

Jim and Jeanine leave California.

Wednesday, November 11, 2009

We wanted you all to be among the first to know that we have finally received our invitation to <Eastern Europe>! We have an appointment with a government official on December 8 at 9:00 a.m. At that meeting we will hopefully be approved to proceed and be able to officially claim our new daughter as the object of our intent (and great affection)!

We will then have a 15 hour train ride to the region she lives in and begin the legal process there. Our facilitator is hopeful that we may be able to have a court date within about 2 weeks. A judge will decide if this is in the best interest of the child (easy decision, we think). Then there will be a 10 day waiting period…and it gets a little tricky here…because it will potentially lead right up to the long holiday period that lasts until January 10. So, we may end up coming home for those days (which could end up being close to 3 weeks) and return to complete the process when their holidays are over. Or, we may need to just stay – we will have to make that decision when we are there.

That might be way too much information for some of you…but some of you might be interested in all that.

Thank you for your patience and support through this roller coaster we’ve been on. Please continue praying for us to be prepared when it’s time to leave and for God’s help and wisdom and protection while we are there and for our family here too!

We love you all and are thankful for you!!!

-Jeanine and Jim

(Note: Eastern European time is 10 hours ahead of P.S.T.)
